The name of this plant, Origanum, comes from the Greek: "oros" mount and "genos" splendor, therefore "splendor of mountains".
Considered in ancient Greece a plants of peace and happiness, is an annual plant, spontaneous on the Sicilian mountains. It is collected in little bunches when the tops are still bloomed and dryed in the shadow in appropriate drying rooms. The naturally dryed product, very much aromatic, is a fundamental ingredient of many dishes of the Mediterranean cuisine, like the "carne alla pizzaiola". It is widely used in the preparation of the famous pizza "Rianata" (Origanata), in the preparation of salades and in the "ammogghiu" (the classic salsa for grilled fishes), like flavour for the baking of steaks and much more.
The product of the Isola del Miele is biological with CODEX certification. It can be buyed in little bunches from fifty grams up to a kilogram. Little plants are also available for gardening or production systems.
