The Isola del Miele is a company born in 1999 like apiarian company, specialized in the production of mono-flower honey, taking advantage of the pastures of the natural reservoirs presents in the province of Trapani and using for the production of the honey the Sicilian Bee.

The apiarian vocation of Marettimo, of which there are several testimonies dating back to very remote times, today finds a continuation the honey produced from the apiarian company Isola del Miele that with infinite passion and modern systems of breeding still attends to this ancient art.

It is worth an example for all; the honey produced in Marettimo has traditionally crossed the oceans along with the Siclian emigrants, as testifies us Masinu "du meli", the last bee-keeper that operated with the ancient beehives of ferula (kind of perennial plants of the family of the ombrellifere, famous in Sicily with the name of "Fella"), historically described from Latin author Columella.

The ancient "Apari" used to raise the bees in "fasceddi", beehives of ferula, put into effect the transhumance for procurare always fresh and abundant pasture to the bees, transporting them accordingly to the varying of the seasons in the places whose the closings are renewed.

From "The Historia of Trapani" we can read about Marettimo, then completely deserted: "Sacra fors'anco potria tal isola esser stata chiamata per cagion della gran copia del mele, che da' gentili era con non poca superstizione nei loro sacrifizj adoperato, et è quivi dell'api, per abbondanzia del timo che vi hanno, il cui fiore è sopra d'ogn'altro volentiermente da esse gustato in gran quantità."

The bee-keepers of the Egadi travel today over again the ancient paths (trazzere) of the transhmance equipped with modern tools, making to live again the ancient art of the bee-keeping and proposing it like an activity able to affect the economy of the archipelago.

The uncontaminated nature, the inaccessibility of the places and the distance from the Sicialian coast, all of this make the island of Marettimo particularly adapted to the realization of a scientific program of safeguard and selection of the Sicilian bee.

This program, unique in its kind in the Mediterranean, involves university agencies, also foreign, the Forest Inspectorate, the Provincial Association "La Regina", and various local bee-keepers. It will carry the Egadi Islands to become the genetic tank of the race Bee Sicilian bee.

The Isola del Miele produces also biological origanum certificated by CODEX.
